My Thoughts On Tuesday Night Pro Stock

By David G. Firestone

With all the changes that the NHRA has made to Pro Stock in the last few years, I have one question: Does the NHRA want Pro Stock to die? Based on everything I’ve been seeing, it would appear so. Let’s take a look at the changes

In 2015, it was announced that the naturally aspirated engines would be replaced by an electronic fuel injection engine. This was to be implemented in the 2016 season. The result was making them look more like their showroom counterparts. The hood scoops were popular among fans, so this didn’t sit well.

In the few months between 2015 and 2016, the teams were scrambling to assemble the new engines, which left very little time for off-season testing. Only one team, Ken Black Racing realized that dyno testing would be an effective replacement. For 2016, and 2017, the category was dominated by KB Racing.

2018 saw a desperate flailing of the NHRA to fix their own mistake. This came in the form of changing the long standing rule that the body and engine had to be made in the same shop. With the new rule, any eligible body/engine combo was acceptable. A new television package was announced, as was a shorter Pro Stock season, but nothing was made of it during the 2018 season.

The 2018 season saw a much better season, with numerous winners, and a good championship battle. While that was a great season, there were some issues. 2017 Champion Bo Butner, and 2018 Champion Tanner Gray announced they were leaving the sport at the end of the season. Butner would later change his mind, and would rejoin the category due to the shortened season.

2019 saw a decent start to the season. The on-track racing was good, and competitive. But the NHRA had to find a way to screw it up. Fox Sports decided, for reasons that escape me, that it would be a good thing to only show Top Fuel and Funny Car on some Sunday telecasts, and Pro Stock on Tuesday nights.

This has pissed off fans to no end, myself included. In addition to the pointless tape delay, Tuesday night is a major night for major television programs. So, if you like to watch different things, as most people do, you have to chose between normal programming or Pro Stock. Above and beyond that, I can’t imagine that the TV rating were great. The Sunday telecasts are good for ratings, so the new format isn’t going to work.

My take here is the basic logic that “if it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it.” The NHRA has expended so much effort fixing a non-broken Pro Stock, that the damage is such that the category will only continue to suffer. The reduced season, and the new television deal are steps in the wrong direction, and I can’t imagine that the NHRA wants to walk back to what works…which is sad.

Paint Scheme Grades-March 2, 2019

By David G. Firestone

Landon Cassill #00 StarCom Fiber Chevy Camaro-This new version of the scheme is still bad, but it’s not as bad as it was. That said, it’s awful, so I’ll give it in D+.

Kurt Busch #1 ComSurv Chevy Camaro-Good look, great color scheme, no complaints here. A

Clint Bowyer #14 Haas CNC Ford Mustang-This is a great new look. It’s smooth, and has a great color scheme. This gets an A.

Ross Chastain #15 Rim Ryderz Chevy Camaro-Same scheme as #27, same A- grade.

Kyle Busch #18 Snickers Creamy Toyota Camry-The Snickers brown is a great color, and the creamy motif works very well here. All things considered, this scheme is worth an A.

Paul Menard #21 Menard’s/Moen Ford Mustang-The new Menard’s template is a downgrade. It’s too over done. That said, the Moen look is a decent look. The purple works well here. I’d say this is worth a B+.

Michael McDowell #34 Fr8 Auctions Ford Mustang-This is a major upgrade from the 2018 Fr8 Auctions scheme. There is room for improvement here, I would tone down the designs a bit. It’s still a decent scheme, so I’ll give it a B+.

Chris Buescher #37 Scott Comfort Plus Chevy Camaro-Same scheme as last year, same C- grade.

David Ragan #38 Fireade Ford Mustang-This is a really over designed scheme, but it has a good color scheme. Just because you can design a certain scheme, does not mean you should. C-

Daniel Suarrez #41 Aaris Ford Mustang-The shade of orange works well, the black pairs well with it, the stripe looks good. Nothing wrong with this one! A

Kyle Larson #42 McDonald’s Team Classic Chevy Camaro-The over sized golden arches work very well, and the plain red works very well too. This scheme works very well, and gets an A.

Darrell Wallace Jr. #43 McDonald’s Team Bacon Chevy Camaro-If it was a plain white version of the above scheme, I would give it an A. However, the addition of the red square under the door numbers, and hood look odd, and the roof is just perplexing. It’s not terrible, but it looks odd. I’ll give it a B+.

BJ McLeod #52 Trick Shot Chevy Camaro-It’s an over designed mess, it has a bad color scheme, and the color scheme doesn’t work with the design scheme. F

Garrett Smithley #77 HeroBox, Harrell’s and Precision Turf Chevy Camaro-A smooth look with a great color scheme will always earn an A.

Matt DiBenedetto #95 Procore Chevy Toyota Camry-The toned down design is a major upgrade, and I do like the motif on the sides. It’s still somewhat over designed, but it’s a good scheme, so I’ll give it a B+.

Parker Kligerman #96 Gaunt Brothers Racing Toyota Camry-Same scheme as last year, same A grade.

NASCAR Napkin Rings Revisited

By David G. Firestone

The tradition of giving special rings to teams that win championships in sports in the United States dates back to 1922. After winning the World Series, the New York Giants issued the first championship ring, and the trend has caught on. In the 1990’s a new form of this trend came in to wide spread use in NASCAR, the championship napkin ring.

I’ve talked about NASCAR banquet rings before. They just fascinate me. I’ve understood the significance of championship rings, who doesn’t. But I’ve never seen these kinds of rings before, where they were enlarged, and used at the banquet as napkin rings until I came across these NASCAR example.

These over sized rings were used as napkin rings for team banquets and then the attendees were allowed to keep them. They were awarded for winning a race, and designed in the same style as championship rings.

In 1993, he won the Daytona 500, the race came down to the white flag as Dale Jarrett passed Dale Earnhardt in what became known as “The Dale and Dale Show.” With his father Ned in the broadcast booth calling the race, Dale Jarrett won the race, his second career victory. His first, incidentally, came at Michigan in 1991, while driving by the Wood Brothers. This ring was made for the banquet. It shows some wear on the inside. The top is a traditional design, one side has a picture of Dale Jarrett, his signature and #18. The other side has a picture of the car sandwiched in between INTERSTATE BATTERIES RACING and JOE GIBBS RACE TEAM. The inside shows some wear in the form of spots. In 1994, he won his third race, the Mello Yello 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He won after an engine failure claimed Geoff Bodine and a late crash destroyed the cars of Ricky Rudd and Jeff Gordon. This ring, almost identical in design to the Daytona 500 ring was prepared for the banquet. The only difference is that the #18 in the center of the top of the ring is in yellow, as the race was sponsored by Mello Yello. The small spots on the Daytona 500 ring are present here as well. This next one is from the 1995 Coca Cola 600, which was won by Bobby Labonte. During that race, he started 2nd, led 85 laps, and his brother Terry finish second. It was his first Sprint Cup win, and is done in a gold colored metal, with Labonte’s image, car number and signature on one side, and an image of his car on the other side. It briefly spread to Roush Racing, where, at the 1997 banquet, these rings were issued to Jeff Burton’s crew for his victory in the 1997 Hanes 500 at Martinsville. During that race, he started 10th and led 92 laps. This silver ring with an enameled 99 logo, a Roush Racing logo, car logo and signature on one side, and an Exide Racing Team logo, and crossed checkered flag logo on the other side. In 1997, Texas Motor Speedway hosted their first race, the Interstate Batteries 500. The event saw Dale Jarrett on the pole and Jeff Burton winning the race. This proves my theory that Interstate Batteries was behind the rings. This pewter ring was prepared for the race. I haven’t been able to figure out if this is was used at a banquet, or was sold in the gift shop. But it’s nearly identical design and style is hard to ignore. Since Interstate Batteries was doing this for Joe Gibbs racing before this race, and then this ring was made for that race, there is no doubt in my mind that Interstate Batteries was the driving force behind that.   Above and beyond that, it makes sense that Jeff Burton’s team would do that, since at that time, they were sponsored by Exide Batteries, a competitor to Interstate. Exide had to have found out what Interstate was doing, and once Jeff Burton began winning races, Exide decided to join in the fun. It would also explain why there don’t seem to be any examples of any other teams making these rings besides Joe Gibbs Racing, and Roush Racing.

Ok, now with that out of the way, let’s stay in 1997, and look at a new design that Bobby Labonte’s team was given. The 1997 Napa 500 at Atlanta was the season finale. Jeff Gordon won the championship over Dale Jarrett by 14 points. Bobby Labonte won the race. It’s the same design as the other rings, except it is made of pewter. The material change is very evident in that it shows scratches and more chips than their brass counterparts.   Pewter didn’t last too long, and they switched back to brass by 1999. By 1999, the rings were redesigned as well. The driver profile hasn’t changed, but on the other side, a new logo design takes over the car logo. The crest of the ring has a bigger #18 and a glaze around it, instead of a cheap enamel.
The silver color returned in 2000, which culminated in Bobby Labonte winning the NASCAR Winston Cup Championship over Dale Earnhardt. One of the four races he won was the 2000 Dura Lube / Kmart 400 at Rockingham. This brand new design was prepared. A new #18 panel was designed, with the sponsor panel unchanged. The crest has been redesigned with car color on the stone area, and bigger lettering on the front. 5 years later, in 2000, Labonte won the won the 2000 Dura Lube / Kmart 400 at Rockingham.  He started third, and led 134 laps.  This napkin ring was made as a response.

Also in 2000, Bobby Labonte UAW-GM Quality 500, again at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He started 2nd, and led 37 laps. This ring was given at the banquet to the attendees, it is silver, with an enameled Interstate Batteries logo on the top, Labonte’s name and car number on one side, and Interstate Batteries and Joe Gibbs Racing logos on the other side.

Next week, a vintage driver suit.

Throwback Thursday-1979 Bob Glidden Plymouth Arrow

1979 Bob Glidden Plymouth Arrow

With his second entry in as many weeks, Whiteland, Indiana’s own Bob Glidden brings his 1979 Arrow. As I said in my Billy The Kid review from a few weeks ago, I hate the way the Arrow looks. It has a really odd set of proportions. Add in a paint scheme that has too many stripes and a great color scheme, and you have a B- scheme.

Paint Scheme Grades-February 23, 2019

By David G. Firestone.

Brad Keselowski #2 Auto Trader Ford Mustang-Same scheme as last year, same C grade.

Ryan Blaney #12 Menard’s/Peak Ford Mustang-As with the Knauff scheme, this is a downgrade from last year, but it’s still a decent look, albeit a tad over designed. I’ll give it a B+.

Ryan Blaney #12 Money Lion Ford Mustang-The Penske template is finicky as a template. Not every color scheme works well. In this case, it’s not great, but not terrible, it’s middle of the road. As such, I’ll give it a C.

Ryan Blaney #12 Body Armor Ford Mustang-Same scheme as last year, same B+ grade.

Clint Bowyer #14 DeKalb Ford Mustang Fusion-Same scheme as last year, same A grade.

Ross Chastain #15 Chevy Camaro-Same scheme as last year, same A grade.

Casey Mears #27 Rim Ryderz Chevy Camaro-My only complaint is that I don’t like the stripes at the front. Still, it’s a solid design, so I’ll give it an A-.

Tyler Reddick #31 Symbicort Chevy Camaro-Another instance of a new scheme neither improving, nor going backward. It’s a C- scheme, just a different C- scheme from last year.

Matt Tift #36 Surface Sunscreen Ford Mustang-The overall color is decent, not great. I think the sublimated designs, and the faces on the bottom are over done. It’s a decent look, but there is a lot of room for improvement. All things considered, this scheme gets a B+.

David Ragan #38 Citgard Ford Mustang-The color scheme is great, but I think that the design is over done. Stripes can work well, these stripes need improvement. Still, it’s not terrible, so I’ll give it a B+.

Jamie McMurray #40 McDonald’s/Cessna Chevy Camaro-Same scheme as last year, same A grade.

Brendan Gaughan #62 Beard Oil/South Point Chevy Camaro-Same scheme as last year, same A grade.

Joey Gase #66 AgriSupply Toyota Camry-Take a decent concept, add too many colors, and too many stripes, and you have an A scheme taken down to a C scheme.

Parker Kligerman #96 Toyota: Proud Sponsor of Team USA Toyota Camry-Great look, great color scheme, nice design scheme, this gets an A.
