Some More Thoughts On Bonuses and All-Star Events In Racing

By David G. Firestone

So, after my last post on Dale Jarrett, I had decided to take a week off. That ended up turning in to two weeks because of reasons far beyond my control. I will try to post more often, but I can’t guarantee anything solid.

With that, I’d like to discuss my recent post on the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge. A very valid point was made in the comment section by someone named Neil.

“I feel any amount of money can help drag racers. It gives fans something to look forward to in qualifying. Gets Mission Foods name mentioned a lot on the media and by announcers or anyone describing the race. I can’t see anything bad about it.”

After thinking this over, I agree. However, the same formula over and over and over gets a little stale. If you have to have the challenge, switch it up every event. It doesn’t always have to be “semifinalists from the previous race against each other in a pair of rematches.” You can have other qualifiers. Here are a few examples”

-Top 4 fastest speeds

-Top 4 qualifiers

-Top 4 elapsed times

-Top 4 reaction times

-Top 4 popular fan votes

See what I mean? It’s the same basic thing with a cash bonus, but it would be a little different each time. It keeps the event fresh. It keeps it fun. Keeps the fans invested. Give us a reason to care sometimes. Slight changes can keep fans invested.

A huge part of the reason fans really aren’t invested in either the NASCAR All-Star Race, or the Clash is that they are more or less the same. I think the Clash should be for pole award winners only, and the All-Star Race should keep a similar format. It would be different enough, and interesting enough to bring the fans back. We don’t need the same two bonus events within a four-month period. Again keep the events fresh, and give the fans a reason to care. That’s all we ask.

I'm just a normal guy who collects race-worn driver suits, helmets, sheet metal, and other race-worn items. I will use this blog to help collectors, and race fans alike understand the various aspects of driver suits and helmets, and commentate on paint schemes.
