Throwback Thursday-Al Sergrini-1983

Al Segrini stands his wheels in his 1983 Super Brut funny car

Another example of a great shade of green paired with black. The silver and black scheme between the green and the black works well. I also like the fact that the logos are painted so that they look straight when the car does a wheel stand. The SUPER BRUT logo works very well here. I give it an A.

My Thoughts on 2017

By David G. Firestone

The 2017 racing season is behind us. We’ve all watched racing and we enjoyed it. We had highs, we had lows. We laughed, we cried, we yelled in anger, and we yelled in joy. We are racing fans, and we love watching racing.

Some of the observations I’ve made I’ve discussed here on The Driver Suit Blog, but some things I haven’t. So before I take my December sabbatical, I have a few things to discuss. I’ve been waiting for the season to end to discuss some things.

First off, I’m a fan of the NASCAR Playoff system, I know many people aren’t. But the bracket system keeps the pressure on the drivers to perform. The final race of the season has 4 different drivers who can win the championship. That final race is pressure packed, and the best driver won. Martin Truex Jr. won 8 races, including the final race and the Championship.

I was wondering who would win the Xfinity Series Championship, and it was William Byron. This does not bode well for his Cup career. Historically, drivers who perform well in the Xfinity Series will come to the Cup Series and flame out. This list includes David Green, Steve Grissom, Joe Nemechek, Randy LaJoie, and Johnny Benson. Martin Truex Jr. is the second driver to win the Cup championship after winning the Xfinity Series championship before he was an established Cup star.

Ford pulling out of the NHRA to focus on other racing series was a really dumb move, especially since Chevy won all three Mello Yello Drag Racing Series four-wheeled championships. They also came up short in NASCAR and the WeatherTech Sports Car Championship. Ford made a really bad decision in this respect, and I hope their racing division is proud of themselves.

If you aren’t familiar with Bill Burr, that’s a shame. He’s a Boston-based comic who watches Formula 1. He did a podcast where he discusses his Formula 1 feelings. He is hilarious, and his observations are great. Even if you aren’t a racing fan, his podcast is great. Bill Burr’s Malaysian GP rant is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a while.

Starting next year, Formula 1 will move from NBC to ESPN. I’m going to guess that Fox didn’t offer a contract. ESPN has made it clear in recent years that they have no respect for auto racing fans. ESPN had to bring some kind of auto racing back, to boost their sagging ratings. NASCAR and the NHRA weren’t on the table, Formula 1 was on the table. Good luck ESPN, good luck Formula 1, you are going to need it.

Finally, there have been some shake ups in schedules for 2018. NASCAR has moved the Daytona 500 up a week. As a direct result, the next nine races have also moved up a week. The first Dover race has moved from June 4 to May 4. Chicagoland has moved from September to the first week in July, and the summer Daytona race has moved from the first week of July to the second week. Kentucky and New Hampshire have moved up one week. Charlotte’s second race has been moved up, and will use the road course instead of the oval course.

In Formula 1, France and Germany will both host new Grand Prix races. The Chinese and Bahrain Grands Prix have switched places on the new schedule. The Malaysian Grand Prix has been dropped from the schedule all together. IndyCar has decided to replace Watkins Glen with Portland. In the NHRA, the Route 66 Nationals and the New England Nationals have switched places, due to NASCAR’s schedule change.

That about does it for 2017. I will spend December working on projects, and will come back in January, ready to go. I look forward to seeing you then.

The Final Paint Scheme Grades Of 2017-November 25, 2017

By David G. Firestone

First a 2018 Scheme…

Daniel Suarez #19 Stanley Toyota Camry-It’s an over designed mess with too many different design elements to really look good.  The only thing keeping this scheme above water is a great color scheme. D-

Now on to 2017 schemes…

Matt Kenseth #20 DeWalt Final Race Toyota Camry-I like the idea of a driver racing their final race with the scheme they started racing in.  I especially like it when the scheme is a smooth scheme with a great look.  This is a great scheme. A

David Ragan #38 The Weather Channel Ford Fusion-The Front Row template works very well with sky blue and white. It’s a great look, and has a great color scheme, so it naturally gets an A.

Kyle Larson #42 Credit One/DC Solar Chevy SS-It’s a bit over done, though it’s not terrible.  I think this could work better if it was a fade as opposed to cutting edge designs.  It is a decent scheme, so I’ll give it a B-.

Kyle Weatherman #51 P2 Patrick Peterson Chevy SS-There is nothing bad I can say about this scheme.  It has a great look, and a great design. A

David Starr #66 Eureka Chevy SS-The design has been revamped, the car has a better look as a result.  Throw in a great color scheme, and you have a scheme worth an A.

Joey Gase #83 Premier Millwright Toyota Camry-BK Racing seems to take joy in over designing their cars.  This is one such example.  While it does have a mediocre color scheme, the side design is beyond overdone, and has a horrible look.  I hate this look, and it earns an F.

Ray Lipper and Center Line Wheels Part 2

By David G. Firestone

Our last Friday Feature for Minor League Month is a continuation of what I started last week. Last week, I examined a driver suit worn by Center Line Wheels founder Ray Lipper. While the suit was an interesting find, it was only part of a larger uniform set. This week, I will examine the rest of the contents of the uniform set. This has to be the most comprehensive uniform set I have ever seen.

There is a black restraint harness included, which shows some light wear. There is also a set of orange Simpson gloves, both of which show heavy wear on the palms. Ray also wore these white Simpson racing shows, both of which show heavy wear. The right show has a tear in it, and the left shoe has some damage. The soles have dirt caked in them. This white balaclava was also worn, though there is no indication of who made it. This Linea Sport Nomex undershirt, which is thick and shows a lot of use is included in the lot. I’ve been trying to find out information about Linea Sport, but I’ve had no luck. This Italian-made pair of long-johns shows decent wear, as per the shirt, but are not as heavy as the shirt. This is a pair of black Nomex socks. They have no manufacturer indicated, and one is deformed from them being in a ball for some time. Moving on from the uniform elements, the lot also comes with a number of miscellaneous items.Race cars tend to be very loud, so Ray wore this par of earplugs, complete with original box. Cadillac Shoe Products has no affiliation with the Cadillac automobile company. This pair of black Cadillac shoe laces came with the set. This set of (presumably) car keys was used by Lipper at some point.A small, orange Snell Sport Vynl folder is included, and the contents of which are very interesting. This is a paper race result from the 1980 SCCA Formula Super Vee USA Robert Bosch/Valvoline Championship. One of the Gold Cup race took place at Watkins Glen on July 5, 1980. Lipper finished 16th, driving a Super Vee. He won $250 for his efforts. In preparation for a race at what is now Sonoma Raceway, Lipper hand drew this map of the track, and added notes as to what he should do in the car while driving in that area. This is a map of Watkins Glen, both the track, and the way to the track. It shows a lot of wear. In addition to racing in the United States, Lipper also raced in New Zealand. This is Lipper’s Motorsports Association of New Zealand(MANZ) license. The Manawatu Car Club is New Zealand’s oldest car club. Lipper was a part of it in 1982, and this is his member ticket. While Center Line Wheels may not be an independent company anymore, their lineage lives on. Ray Lipper has retired, both from Center Line and Racing. He’s been inducted into the SEMA Hall of Fame, and is another example of what makes racing great. He’s a businessman who races to help promote his company.

It’s that time of year again…next week…THE PAINT SCHEMIES!

Throwback Thursday-Frank Manzo-1983

NHRA legend Frank Manzo is flying in his 1983 Ace Manzo funny car

Black and metallic gold=good color scheme. Red, blue, and purple=mediocre color scheme. The two together=Not a good look at all. This is an instance of two different designs on a car that clash with each other. I could handle the triple stripe if it were on a car by itself. Same with the gold and black scheme. Together, they are a disaster. The ACE MANZO logo would look good on both. Basically this is a D- scheme that could have been an A scheme.

My Thoughts on The New Firefox

By David G. Firestone

We are all brand loyal. We all have our brands that we loyally support. We are also brand disloyal. We all have our brands that we avoid like the plague. Don’t try to tell me that you aren’t brand loyal and disloyal. For 35 years, we’ve had a GM car in our driveway, and Taster’s Choice coffee in our cupboard.

Every once in a while, something happens that forces us to change our minds and our ways. Sometimes it is because a company goes out of business. Other times it’s because the company changes the product so much that a brand loyal guy like me has to switch. That is exactly the situation I found myself in last week.

So Mozilla released a new version of Firefox this week, Firefox Quantum. They claim this new version is faster and doesn’t use as much memory, which sounds good. Being the loyal Firefox guy that I was, I decided to upgrade. This is a decision I would quickly regret. This new version of Firefox with the add ons that I use is so slow and uses up so much memory and CPU, that I couldn’t do the basic things I could with the older version.

I tried everything I could possibly do to make it work, but I finally had to admit defeat. So I then imported my bookmarks and settings to Google Chrome. With a similar set of add ons, I’ve had no problems with memory and CPU that I did with Firefox. So Firefox in making things “better” made it unusable, and now I’m no longer brand loyal to Firefox.

I don’t ask for much, but I want a browser that does what I need it to do without using 100% of memory and CPU. If it can’t do that, I won’t use it, simple as that. If I have an object that can’t do the one thing I need it to do, it makes no sense to keep it. A couple years ago, we got a new clothes dryer, because the old one wouldn’t dry the clothes, thereby making it useless.

So after years and years of using Firefox, I have made the change to Google Chrome, and it works the way that I want it to. So I see no reason to switch back. I don’t feel bad, and I don’t miss it. It’s just a browser in the end.

Paint Scheme Grades-November 18, 2017

By David G. Firestone

First some 2018 schemes…

William Byron #9 Hooters Chevy Camaro-Hooters has a good color scheme, and while this is a new look, it’s not an improvement.  I think it could be better if the whole car was orange, and the white was limited to numbers and logos.  Still, it’s not terrible, so I’ll give it a B-.

Aric Almirola #10 Smithfield Foods Ford Fusion-The black and white slash pattern is a good look, and the car has an amazing look.  I’ll give it an A.

Darrell Wallace Jr. #43 Click N Close Ford Fusion-The shade of blue works well, and the design works well.  It’s an all around great look. A

Now on to the 2017 schemes…

Brad Keselowski #2 Miller Lite Veterans Ford Fusion-New scheme for 2017, same as regular Miller Lite scheme, but with names of deceased veterans on side. A

Austin Dillon #3 Realtree Chevy SS-White with camoflague is not a good look, and while the design would work with another color it doesn’t work with white.  I’ll give it a D-

Joey Gase #7 Eternal Fan Chevy SS-I think that the blue could be darker, but the whole car has a good look, and it works very well. A-

Clint Bowyer #14 Damnation Ford Fusion-The field motif is a bold look, but it works well.  The color and design work well.  It’s an all around great look.  A

DJ Kennington #15 Northern Provincial Pipelines LTD Chevy SS-The Canadian flag motif works very well here, the color and design scheme work well, and the scheme gets the A is deserves.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. #17 Robert Yates Tribute Ford Fusion-The 1990’s Texaco scheme works very well, and this tribute car works well, with the color and design faithful to the original.  It’s worth an A.

Corey LaJoie #23 Beardfresh/Earthwater Toyota Camry-The solid black matte look is the best that Earthwater has looked all year. A

Ryan Newman #31 Cat Minstar Chevy SS-While I’m not big on the cutting edge designs that CAT has used, the Minestar color scheme works well with the look.  It’s a great look. A

Kyle Larson #42 Refresh Chevy SS-There are two different designs in play here, either one would work well by itself, but together, the wave form and the fade creates a cluttered look. The color scheme is decent, so I’ll give it a C.

David Starr #66 Eureka Chevy SS-While this scheme would normally get an A, the vaccum design looks a lot like race damage, and it takes an A scheme down to a B-.

Ray Lipper and Center Line Wheels Part 1

By David G. Firestone

Minor League Month continues, and this week is the first of two articles about a business man who raced to help promote his business.

In April of 2017, Center Line Wheels ceased production after 47 years. In August of 2017, the company was acquired by Corona, California based wheel manufacturer Design Infini. During those 47 years, Center Line had been a well-known aftermarket wheel rim company, which made high performance rims. Since Center Line had been a performance wheel company, it makes sense that they had been involved in motorsports, including supplying wheels to racing teams, as well as sponsoring teams.

Center Line was founded as the Center Line Tool Corporation in 1970 by Ray Lipper. Lipper saw the need for a good performance rim, and soon the company started focusing only on wheels. Lipper was also an avid racer, and raced in SCCA, and CART. His time in CART was not successful, with a DNS at the Phoenix race, and was one of 47 drivers not to qualify for the 1982 Indianapolis 500. He was elected to the SEMA Hall of Fame in 2002. During his racing career, he wore this racing uniform.

The uniform set, which is one of the most comprehensive I have ever seen, includes a suit, gloves, shoes, an undershirt, long johns, a harness, and some other miscellaneous stuff. We’ll look at the other stuff next week, this week, we will focus on the white Simpson driver suit, which shows some light use, and is very thick, and heavy duty. The collar has a Velcro-closure, with no adornment. The cowl tag is an older Simpson warranty label, used into the late 1980’s.While there is no large sponsor patch on the torso, there are a number of smaller patches on the chest and torso. On the right side, there is an older VALVOLINE logo, RAY LIPPER embroidered in a patch, a SIMPSON patch next to the name, and a WATKINS GLEN US GRAND PRIX patch below that. The left side of the front has CART,CENTER LINE RACING WHEELS,SCCA,ROAD AMERICA CAN AM 1981 CHICAGO REGION SCCA,and VW MOTORSPORT patches sewn into it.The suit features an unadorned white belt. The legs have a red stripe running up the white material, and have standard cuffs. The shoulders have red stripes that extend down to the cuff of the sleeves, and white straps that would be used to pull the driver out of the car in case of a fire. The right sleeve has a UNITED STATES AUTO CLUB patch, and has the red stripe extending to the cuff. The left sleeve features a SIMPSON RACE PRODUCTS patch, as well as a PPG INDUSTRIES patch. The back of the suit doesn’t show any wear to speak of.The back of the neck is unadorned. The upper back of the suit has a large GOODYEAR patch sewn into it.Ray Lipper is an automotive engineer who has raced all over the world. He was just as focused on racing as he was on making quality wheels. Next week, I will examine the rest of the uniform set.

Throwback Thursday-Frank Hawley-1983

Frank Hawley in the Chi-Town Hustler hustles down the track in 1983

Blue, white, and metallic gold could be difficult to work with. But this classic scheme takes a difficult color scheme and makes it work very well. The design scheme works very well here too. I do like the TEAM STRANGE logo on the sides. It’s a solid A scheme.
