Paint Scheme Grades-February 27, 2016

Danica Patrick #10 Aspen Dental Chevy SS-The scheme has gone from somewhat ugly to really ugly in a hurry. The designs are all wrong, the colors don’t work, and the whole car looks as though it was designed by second grades. F

Greg Biffle #16 Roush Performance Ford Fusion-This new scheme keeps the great color scheme of last years’ but with a brand new design that is as bold, but nowhere near as bad. The design and color scheme work very well, and earn an A+.

Paul Menard #27 Valvoline/Menard’s Chevy SS-Another instance where the color scheme and template just don’t work. The old Menard’s Template with the hood design carrying the front sponsor was quite good, but with Valvoline, the car just looks bad, and it just doesn’t work. F

Matt DiBendetto #83 Sewanee University Toyota Camry-The color scheme is great, but the blue designs on the side are pointless, and make the car look cluttered. If those designs were removed, I would give it an A, but the best I can give this design is a B+.

Gripping the Wheel With James Buescher

While I like to analyze driver suits, as you all know, I like collecting and analyzing many other kinds of racing memorabilia, and uniform items. I’m not discriminatory on which series I collect, and I’ll take a chance with anything. This pair of James Buescher race-used and signed gloves are an example of one of those items.

Buescher is the 2012 Camping World Truck Series Champion, who has won 6 races in his career. He’s transitioned to the Xfinity Series as well. He won the 2012 DRIVE4COPD 300 at Daytona, which was notable for Danica Patrick wining the pole, and the huge wreck on the last lap. Those successes, along with some success in the ARCA Racing Series, means he will be in the Sprint Cup within the next few years. These are a pair of his race-used gloves. It’s not easy to figure out when these gloves were used, but a little video research can go a long way. Based on my research, I can safely say that these gloves were used before 2011, possibly after, as video footage and photograph research clearly show Buescher wearing this style of gloves in 2010, but switching to a different design in 2011. I’ll give Buescher credit where credit is due, he was really good with glove color matching sponsors. Since there are a number of sponsors using this color scheme, it doesn’t seem too far fetched that they were used post-2010.

The gloves themselves are a pair of Simpson Competitor gloves, size Large. The gloves are in great condition. They both meet SFI 3.3/5 Requirements, which will protect Buescher from 2^nd degree burns for 10 seconds. They are black, with yellow accents. The grips on the palms are yellow, and have Simpson logos on them.

The hems have SFI Certification as well as size tags. Buescher has signed both gloves, with the inscription “31.” James Buescher, along with his older brother Chris are both NASCAR champions. Next week, we’ll look at a series of memorabilia from another group of championship winning brothers…

Throwback Thursday-Bob Howard-1987

Bob Howard tried to make the 1987 Winston Western 500 in this 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass.

While Kodak has my favorite shade of yellow, Pennzoil has a good shade of yellow too. Bright, but not too bright, it works very well as a base color. The red numbers work well on the yellow background. The rear logo cuts off around the wheel well, and I really don’t like that.

I noticed at the front of the car that the contingency decals start by the number, and appear to be in good order, and they seem to get more and more clumsily applied toward the front. I don’t understand why the team didn’t move some towards the back, where there is a lot of empty space. It would look just as good. I also hate Oldsmobile, in terms of NASCAR, because their cars just don’t look good.

My Thoughts on Wind

Winter in Chicago SUCKS! The cold can get to be unbearable. This year, it hasn’t been that bad, and earlier last week, we were all looking forward to the warmer weather predicted for the Chicago area scheduled for Friday. Going from 30 degrees to 65 degrees over the course of a week seemed like a great treat.

Well be careful what you wish for. When the serving of warm weather arrived, it came with a large side of high winds. I had my windows open, and I was scared the wind would blow over my TV set, that’s how powerful it was. It wasn’t just me. In Downtown Chicago, a number of buildings had to be evacuated, there was a lot of damage to buildings. Trees were uprooted. The CTA had to suspend elevated rail service in some areas due to the wind.

I’ve been through a few wind storms in my life, and if you’ve ever experienced one before, you understand. Years ago, March 9, 2002 to be exact, I went to the Museum of Science and Industry for the day, and was going to go on a date that night. As I left the Museum, the winds were insane! I took the bus to Downtown Chicago from the MSI, and decided to take the scenic route, the #147 bus from Downtown to Howard Street. It was about 4 in the afternoon, and traffic on Michigan Ave was solid, not moving at all. As we got towards Watertower Place, we learned that the high winds had knocked a scaffold off the side of the John Hancock Tower, and had crushed an occupied car. As a result, my bus went on the most overly complex reroute.

The winds made the trip down Lakeshore Drive quite interesting, as the bus driver wasn’t comfortable going over 30 MPH, and rightfully so. As I watched the winds outside of The Hauler, I was thinking about that day. Thankfully, nothing really serious, aside from some debris damage. I was worried about work that night, as I work outside, and it was as bad as I thought it was going to be. I could have been worse, as I’ve seen signs at stores nearby blow off by wind before.

The weekend was much less windy, and much more fun, as I got to watch NASCAR again! Hopefully when it warms up again, the winds won’t.

A Hidden Treasure in Tucson

Tucked away in Tucson, hidden on an unpaved road, is a museum that every car guy should see before he dies. It’s a museum devoted to a unique marque of automobile, one so rare, most people have never heard of it. I’m speaking of the Franklin Auto Museum. It’s devoted to the Franklin Automobile Company, which existed from 1904 to 1934, producing some of the most luxurious and innovative cars to date.

The H. H. Franklin Manufacturing Company was founded by H. H, Franklin in 1893 as a die casting manufacturer. In 1900, they expanded in to the automobile industry with the aquision of the talents of John Wilkinson, an engine designed. In 1902, the first Franklin Motor Car was built. By 1904, Franklin was a full-fledged automobile manufacturer.

Franklin cars were advanced, with air-cooled engines, constant level carburetors, and made use of a 4 cylinder straight engine. As time progressed, they shifted from 4 cylinder straight to a V-12 engine, which their aircraft engine subsidiary was innovative in making. Franklin focused on luxury models, often costing significantly more than other models. This focus was the main design aspect of most of their cars. A Franklin was somewhat of a status symbol, but as the economy began to fall, the sales slowed, money was lost, and, by 1934, after 30 years, the company ceased production of cars. Their aircraft engine production continued until 1975, when it was sold to the Government of Poland, and all operations were moved to Poland, where it operates to this day.

One of the children who was driven around in a Franklin was Thomas Hubbard, who was such a fan of Franklins, he would restore them for collectors. He began to buy and restore them for himself. His collection grew, and, as he began to grow older, decided that he should open a museum devoted to the history of the Franklin Automobile Company. After he passed away, that museum opened, and continues to operate to this day.

The collection is very impressive, with examples ranging from 1904, to one of the last cars ever sold in 1934. Three buildings make up the complex. The first one features many of the later models, including this yellow 1925 coupe with a rumble seat, one of the few 1934 Franklins in existence, to H.H. Franklin’s car that he used in New York, complete with remnants from restoration. The second building resembles a traditional garage, and has some of the newer cars, and some of the older cars, including this 1933 Olympic Coupe, this 1934 Sedan with matching luggage, and this 1946 Lincoln V-12 Coupe, which is for sale for $26,500. The third building features many of the really old cars, some as old as 1904. This was my favorite room, as many of the designs are so contradictory to car designs today, that it stunned me that people would willing to drive them.

This is a perfect example of one of those cars, a 1909 Model XD Touring Sedan, which was designed by Ransom E. Olds, who would later go on to found Oldsmobile. It’s a quaint looking car, that was designed before it was decided which is the driver side. The musuem also has a number of hidden treasures and vintage items, such as this vintage Dixie gas pump,and this old stock ticker.There are too many amazing things to list, so here is a slide show.

The museum is open from Mid October to Memorial Day, Wednesday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for Seniors, $5 for teenagers and students, and free for those under 12. This is the video of my tour, and I highly recommend that you take the tour as well.

Throwback Thursday-Tim Richmond-1986

The late Tim Richmond in his 1986 Folger’s Chevy Monte Carlo is up this week.

Red, gold, and white is a great color scheme. The gold reflective door numbers look really good. I wish the stripe would extend all the way around the car, except on just the front and rear. Other than that, this is a really good look.

I’m also amazed at the angle of the spoiler. This was the first year the Monte Carlo had the aerocoupe rear-window design. Previously, the rear-window had been vertical, but because the Ford Thunderbird had the angled rear-window, it was much more aerodynamic. The low angle of the spoiler is meant to work around that.

My Thoughts on 2016 Racing Changes.

The start of the 2016 racing season has brought a number of changes. In the NHRA, the Pro Stock division has new car designs, and the broadcast team has a new color commentator in the form of Tony Pedregon, and a new deal with Fox. In NASCAR, for the first time since the 1992 Hooters 500, Jeff Gordon will not be in a car, but in the broadcast booth.

A lot of people didn’t like Tony Pedregon as color commentator for the Circle K Winternationals. He didn’t seem as relaxed and natural as Mike Dunn did. I’ll say this, Mike Dunn was a broadcaster for 14 years, and was used to playing the role of color commentator. Tony Pedregon isn’t used to his new role yet. He did a good job, in my opinion, and he will get better over time.

Jeff Gordon, on the other hand, seemed much more comfortable in his new role. I’m thinking it has something to do with his acting roles. He’s done commercials, movies, tv shows, and the like. He is used to being in front of the camera. Again, like Tony, he will get better over time. I like the chemesty that Darrell Waltrip and Jeff have with each other, and Mike Joy works well with them both.

My biggest gripe was Pro Stock. The teams did not, in my mind, have a good event. The teams didn’t have the time to do proper testing, outside of dyno testing, and it showed. I like Pro Stock, but watching that event was painful. There weren’t that many good runs, and the ones that were, you could tell, that the drivers were somewhat apprehensive about their cars. What should have happened was that the announcement last year should have been that the fuel injected Pro Stocks should have started in 2017, so that proper testing, and proper development could have been done.

While I have my gripes, I’m looking forward to the racing season, and I can only wait for IndyCar and F1 to start back up.
