Ladies and Gentlemen…THE 2022 PAINT SCHEMIES!

By David G. Firestone

Well, it’s that time again! We have the annual Paint Schemie Awards for the 2022 season. As per the usual, every year, I pick the best and worst paint schemes and award them the Paint Schemie. This was done using the Driver Suit Blog executive committee for paint scheme analysis and consists of me and Driver Suit Blog assistant, my cat Zoe, and uses the following standards:

*Color Scheme:How the colors look, and how they work with each other.

*Overall Design:How good the design itself looks, is there too much, or not enough.

*Primary Sponsor Logos: How the primary sponsor logos look on the car

*Originality: How original is the scheme.

All of the above can work for or against a scheme, and all will be taken into consideration.

Let’s get the bad Paint Scheme Awards out of the way…

The Final Paint Scheme Grades of 2022

By David G. Firestone

Ross Chastain #1 Worldwide Express/Advent Health Chevy Camaro-The blue is bad, and it looks out of place. The car is over designed, and looks terrible. This gets an F.

JJ Yeley #15 World Supercross Championship Ford Mustang-It’s a smooth look, with a great color scheme, and that will always earn an A.

JJ Yeley #15 Rad Cats Ford Mustang-I like the vintage look here, and it has a great color scheme. A

Chris Buescher #17 Fastenal Ford Mustang-I like the look, the hexagons are good, and the car has a bold look. A

Todd Gilliland #38 Boot Barn Ford Mustang-The flag motif works, the desert motif could work, they just look off together. This gets a C.

Ty Dillon #42 U.S. Space Force Chevy Camaro-I like the look, the space motif is a great look, and it’s unique, and bold with a great color scheme. A

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. #47 Kroger/Nature Valley Chevy Camaro-It’s very rare that a paint scheme changes, and I can’t decide if it’s better or worse. This gets the same F the previous scheme did.

Landon Cassill #77 Mutoh/General Formulations Chevy Camaro-Another example of a good color scheme canceled out by a bad design scheme. C

Daniel Suarez #99 Freeway Insurance/CommScope Chevy Camaro-I hope that this isn’t a new template, and changing from black to white improves nothing at all.

Paint Scheme Grades-November 5, 2022

By David G. Firestone

Austin Dillon #3 Dow DAP Chevy Camaro-A smooth look with a great color scheme will always earn an A.

Kevin Harvick #4 BOOsch Ford Mustang-The Halloween look is a good look, and this scheme gets an A.

Corey LaJoie #7 Ark.io Chevy Camaro-An example of changes not really helping a scheme. This is still an over designed mess. F

Denny Hamlin #11 FedEx Freight Direct Toyota Camry-Same scheme as FedEx, same A grade.

AJ Allmendinger #16 Pardon My Cheesesteak Chevy Camaro-This has a good color scheme, and a good design scheme, and this gets an A.

Chris Buescher #17 Fifth-Third Bank Ford Mustang-I liked this scheme back then, and I like this scheme now. This looks great, and it gets an A.

Kyle Busch #18 M&M’s Halloween Toyota Camry-Still a very solid scheme, and this gets an A.

Kyle Busch #18 M&M’s Fan Mosaic Toyota Camry-Same scheme as M&M’s, same A grade.

Todd Gilliland #38 Moji Shushi Ford Mustang-Too many bad colors, and the car is over designed. This gets an F.

Paint Scheme Grades-October 29, 2022

By David G. Firestone

Ross Chastain #1 Kubota/Onx Homes Chevy Camaro-I think the designs are over done, but the color scheme works, so this gets a B.

Austin Dillon #3 Huk Performance Fishing Chevy Camaro-I like the neon motif, and the color scheme works well too. This gets an A.

J.J. Yeley #15 ConectUS Wireless/Kyocera Ford Mustang-I can’t really argue the look. It’s bold, but not over designed, and it gets an A.

Ty Gibbs #23 Money Lion Toyota Camry-Adding teal really doesn’t help anything, so it gets the same D the previous one did.

Cole Custer #41 Dixie Vodka Ford Mustang-The scheme is horribly messy, and has an awful color scheme. F

Bubba Wallace #45 McDonald’s Toyota Camry-Same scheme as #23, same B grade.

John Hunter Nemechek #45 Columbia Sportswear Company Toyota Camry-I like the look here, and I think that the car has a great look, and a great color scheme. A

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. #47 Food 4 Less/Slim Jim Chevy Camaro-The addition of more white takes away from the scheme as a whole. This takes an A scheme down to a B+

Paint Scheme Grades-October 22, 2022

By David G. Firestone

Ross Chastain #1 Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge Chevy Camaro-Same scheme as #99, same F grade.

Corey LaJoie #7 OpTic Gaming Chevy Camaro-I like the color scheme, but the design scheme is very over done. They cancel each other out, and this gets a C

Joey Hand #15 Ford BlueOval City Ford Mustang-Same scheme as #10, same A grade.

Loris Hezemans #27 Hezeberg Engineering Systems Ford Mustang-The design is over done, and I think a darker shade of orange would work better. B

Ty Dillon #42 Lucky29 Liquors Chevy Camaro-I like the color scheme, and I like the design scheme. A

Bubba Wallace #45 Root Insurance Toyota Camry-Toning down the stripes would earn this an A, but with the stripes, this gets a B.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. #47 Kona Brewing Co Big Wave Chevy Camaro-I love the look, the Hawaiian ocean motif works well, this is a great scheme. A

Alex Bowman #48 Ally/Koker’s Garage Chevy Camaro-The look and color scheme is great! This is awesome! A

B.J. McLeod #78 Pala Casino Resort and Spa Ford Mustang-I didn’t think that this scheme could get any better, but they found a way. A

Daniel Suarez #99 Kid Rock’s Honky Tonk Chevy Camaro-While I like the design, I thin the blue and yellow is too bright, and darkening them would improve the scheme. C

Paint Scheme Grades-October 15, 2022

Ryan Blaney #12 Discount Tire Ford Mustang-Same scheme as #2, same A grade.

Justin Haley #31 LeafFilter Gutter Protection Pink Chevy Camaro-Pinkwashing is an automatic F.

Mike Rockenfeller #77 Greenville Swamp Rabbits/Bon Secours Chevy Camaro-Pinkwashing is an automatic F.

Paint Scheme Grades-October 8, 2022

By David G. Firestone

Daniel Hemric #16 Celsius Chevy Camaro-Same scheme as #16, same A grade.

Bubba Wallace #45 Leidos Toyota Camry-Same scheme as #23, same C grade.

Conor Daly #50 BitNile Chevy Camaro-I like the dark blue, the light blue works well, but the green looks out of place. Add in that the car is a bit over designed, and you have a B scheme.

Cody Ware #51 Nurtec ODT Pink Chevy Camaro-Pinkwashing is an automatic F.

BJ McLeod #78 Motorsports Games Frankie Zombie Ford Mustang-Too many colors, and too many designs will always get an F.
