Ladies and Gentlemen…THE 2020 PAINT SCHEMIES!

By David G. Firestone

Well, it’s that time again! We have the annual Paint Schemie Awards for the 2020 season. As per the usual, every year, I pick the best and worst paint schemes and award them the Paint Schemie. This was done using the Driver Suit Blog executive committee for paint scheme analysis and consists of me and Driver Suit Blog assistant, my cat Zoe, and uses the following standards:

*Color Scheme:How the colors look, and how they work with each other.

*Overall Design:How good the design itself looks, is there too much, or not enough.

*Primary Sponsor Logos: How the primary sponsor logos look on the car

*Originality: How original is the scheme.

All of the above can work for or against a scheme, and all will be taken into consideration.

Let’s get the bad Paint Scheme Awards out of the way…

First, the Paint Schemie Award for Worst Regular Season Single Paint Scheme.

By David G. Firestone

For the most part, the 2020 racing season is behind us, and, as tradition, I start The Driver Suit Blog silly season with who wore what suit. The driver is named, with the suit they wore in 2020. If no conclusive photographic evidence of what suit the driver wore is found, there is a ? placed. Without further ado, let’s get started.

Collecting Race Car Waste?

By David G. Firestone

In racing, like any other sporting event, when the fans and athletes leave, there is a lot of waste left. However, unlike most other sports, the debris left has some collector value. There are a number of things, car part, sheet metal, and even rubber that collectors want.

While every other part is custom made, and proprietary, lug nuts are pretty standard, and discarded after the race by teams. Collectors love these. These examples came after a Pocono race weekend from 2013. These all show varying amounts of wear.

When it comes to debris, examples of items include chassis pieces, tape, and claig, or rubber from tires. All are exampled here.

That was a short one, so now we move on to…

TAILGATING TIME!

Fall and winter are upon us, so for a great seasonal recipe, I present:

Frosted Pumpkin Bars

8 Servings

Ingredients:

Bars:

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 cups sugar

1 cup salad oil

4 beaten eggs

1 cup cooked pumpkin

Frosting:

1 8 ounce package of cream cheese

1/2 cup butter

1 teaspoon milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 1 pound box powdered sugar

Another Example of a Balaclava

By David G. Firestone

Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Mark Smith got his start in Formula Super Vee. He raced for Dave White Motorsports, finishing 6th in the championship in 1988, winning at the Meadowlands, and second at Road America. In 1989, racing for Ralt of America, he won at Indianpolis Raceway Park, Milwaukee, Des Moines, and Mid Ohio. He transitioned to Indy Lights in 1990, and eventually won three races, two in 1991, one at Cleveland, and one at Laguna Seca. In 1992, he won a race at Vancouver.

Smith transitioned into CART in 1993, racing for Arciero. He raced for Arciero until the end of the 1993 season, when he left for Walker Racing. In 1994, Smith and Walker Racing had a rather unremarkable season, and Smith left racing. During the 1993 season, Smith wore the Nomex Balaclava, which he also autographed. This Simpson balaclava shows decent use. Supposedly, this was used at New Hampshire in 1993, but there is no evidence that Smith ran there in 1993.

The left side features a vintage Simpson Warranty label. There is no SFI certification present.

The hem of the balaclava has been cut. The end has not been sewn.

The front of the balaclava has some light staining near the nose and mouth area.

Mark Smith has signed the right side of the balaclava in black Sharpie.

The back of the balaclava doesn’t show any wear.

Ok, that was a short one, so I’ll do another…

Aston Martin…Not Just For James Bond Part 2

By David G. Firestone

When the name Aston Martin comes up, people typically have one of two association. The first is a luxury car company, the second is James Bond. Aston Martin has a history that dates back to 1913, and has many iconic cars. Aston Martin is a British Cultural Icon, and even has a Royal Warrant. They supply The Prince of Wales with motor cars.

What most people don’t really realize about Aston Martin is that they have a rich history in auto racing. They have raced at LeMans at various points since 1931, in various different vehicles. They were also heavily involved in Formula 1 as a manufacturer from 1959 to 1960. It was a sponsor from 2016 to 2020, until returning as a manufacturer in 2021 They have won multiple class championships at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2007, 2008 in GT1, a 2014 in LMGTE Am and 2017 in LMGTE Pro.

Obviously, a racing team like this needs a lot of moving parts, and moving personnel. These can include mechanics, pit crew members, and engineers. As such, teams issue suits to these members, including this mechanic suit by Lico, a subdivision of Sparco. The suit shows a little bit of use.

The collar has a Velcro modification, with a LICO logo embroidered into it. There are two tags, a Lico tag with washing instructions, and an L tag sewn into the cowl. The front torso has no adornment at all. The belt is red with a white outline, and a LICO logo embroidered into it.The legs have standard cuffs, and are unadorned. The shoulders have red epaulets outlined in white The sleeves are unadorned. The entire back of the suit, including the neck, and back torso are unadorned. Next week, another racing balaclava.

In 2014, there were a number of drivers who raced for Aston Martin in the LMGTE Pro and LMGTE Am categories in the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship. They won the LMGTE Am driver championship with David Heinemeier Hansson and Kristian Poulsen each with 198 points. One driver from their stable wore these Alpinestars race gloves. The gloves show light use,and it’s impossible to figureout who wore them, as there is on indication whatsoever. The right glove has some minor designs on the red outside, and some more intricate designs on the inside. There is also material loss on the inside The wrist of the glove has the FIA certification. Inside the wrist is the Alpinestars warranty label, and a small patch that says WIN. The left glove is identical to the right glove, including the damage on the inside of the fingers. Next Week, an Aston Martin mechanic suit.
